Helvetica meet LineForm
LineForm, the new vector drawing app from FreeVerse, may be the antithesis of the Delcious Generation. Sure it's not the hottest looking app on the block, but man does it make up for it in terms of simple hands on, get work done, appeal. I keep discovering cool new stuff I can do with this app and I wanted to share this tip:
LineForm can make any boring old font look totally cool and totally unique. This is fab for logos and other typographical design. The trick is to convert the text to an outline (Objects menu > Convert > Outline). This converts any text you type into editable vector art. What you do with it now is up to you! You can drag the points around and modify things to your hearts content. But what's really awesome is that you can now use the artistic brush styles to change the way the lines are drawn. Here are some examples of what you can turn plain old Helvetica into with some quick and easy tweaking:
For the above I've applied a black fill to the text, chosen one of the artistic brushes and bumped up its size. Some of the brushes that use gradient type effects don't seem to work properly at the moment unfortunately, hopefully this bug will be fixed soon.
I use LineForm now almost exclusively for most of my icon design work and I really can't recommend it enough. At $80 it's a bargain.

Another app worth checking out is Pixen (http://www.opensword.org/Pixen/). It has a lot of potential.
Problem is, it crashes like crazy :(
I have Pixel. Beta have a lowe price. I hope final relase will be more stable.

When it comes to creative tools I have a very low tolerance for instability (nothing worse than creating something cool and having it go 'poof'). I've found LineForm to be very stable, not uncrashable, but still solid. It would be nice if some of these bitmap tools would advance to the point where they could replace Photoshop, but no one is really close yet.
I just bought my copy. Huzzah for the weak USD!
